The Sixth Portent

May 15, 2014 1 comment

The sixth world boss was called Ice Worm and spawned in four locations:

  • in the Eiglophian Mountains in front of Yakhmar’s Cave (640, 1160);
  • in the Eiglophian Mountains in front of the entrance to the Vile Nativity (310, 1200);
  • in Ymir’s Pass in front of the Amphitheatre of Karutonia (1190, 730);
  • in Ymir’s Pass near the Temple of Ymir (960, 1300).

I think Funcom needs to find some way to persuade players to make use of all the spawn locations, because otherwise people completely neglect some of them. This month, very few went to Ymir’s Pass, because the two spawn points in the Eiglophian Mountains were so much more conveniently located (they were both close to the Mountain Lodge rez pad).

Much like the previous months, the portent’s arrival was heralded by the spawning of a green mob; this time it was called a Vanir Miner and disappeared as soon as the boss spawned. The miner commits suicide when the boss spawns:

[18:45:31] Vanir Miner’s Ice Worm hits Vanir Miner for 23025 damage.
[18:45:31] Vanir Miner died.

His suicide becomes easier to understand once we consider that his ‘mining’ activities consisted of aimlessly whacking snow with a pick-axe…

The boss itself looks like Yakhmar:

The boss does crushing damage white hits on the aggro holder; it also has a very annoying aoe knockback (Frost Slam, every 20 sec; included some aoe frost damage). There is also a ranged attack, Frost Spit (cold damage), if he can’t reach the aggro holder with melee hits. Sadly, this wasn’t enough to prevent idiots from kiting the boss around; future bosses should have a stun and a oneshot ability for such cases.

The boss would also spawn several waves of adds (Brood Call), which were normal mobs in the normal instance but epic mobs in the epic instance. This made the fight much more challenging in the epic instance, leading most people to ignore any boss spawns in epic instances. Funcom should have thought about this and made the adds epic in the normal instance as well. Interestingly, although the adds were usually level 80, I sometimes also saw lower-level ones, so I suspect that the game chooses the level of each add by picking a random player from the boss’s aggro list and copying his/her level.

Unlike Yakhmar, this boss didn’t have any objections to fire damage — too bad, as it would lead to a lot of hilarity given the chaotic nature of these fights 😛

The loot follows the usual pattern; there is a blue cache (Hunter’s Trove of the Ice Worm) and a purple cache (Slayer’s Cache of the Ice Worm), which then drop various kinds of items when you open them. I haven’t noticed any new loot on this boss. Being located in Cimmeria, it dropped the same regional armor sets as the yeti boss back in January: Slayer, Hyperborean Shaman, Black Leather. In addition there was the usual panoply of pets, crappy potions, social particle effects, T1/T2 raid gear, and the occasional (and usually also crappy) purple weapon or accessory.

There is of course also a new purple Ice Worm mini-pet. I didn’t have much luck with it and only got it after 190 kills, late on Tuesday night less than half an hour before the boss ended spawning. This is also the reason why I didn’t post about this boss earlier — I was busy farming it 😛

It has a few Yakhmar-style animations, roaring and showing its tongue menacingly:

And it occasionally spawns a crow and eats it; a hilariously large amount of blood spurts all over the place.

Although the Hero Ascendant set isn’t new, this month is the first time I got it,
so here’s a screenshot:

Much of the set seems to be inspired by old-world leathery blue sets such as Zephyrous and Baleful; the skirt is an odd mixture of Skyshear and ToS T2; and the helmet, as far as I can tell, is unique in its bizareness. Unlike some of the other social sets from the portent bosses, this one consists of all 8 parts.

I got another new pet from this boss, the Frost Salamander (new in the sense that I didn’t have it before; but it has been dropping from the previous bosses already):

In my experience, purple non-raid gear drops extremely rarely. My first drop of that sort was last month (Iron Band of Constitution), and this month I got another purple ring, which is even less impressive: Pearl Ring of Assault (44 evade rtg, 55 hit rtg, 55 crit rtg, 44 immunity rtg, 120 protection).

The overcrowding on the rez pads reached delirious levels. People were literally falling off the edges 😛
